Choosing Wooden Toys

on Mar 13, 2013 .

When choosing toys for your children, consider the advantage of wooden toys over toys manufactured from plastic. Wooden toys offer children a quiet way to develop thinking skills, creativity, memory, fine motor coordination, judgment and imagination. The toxins in plastic toys expose your children to health hazards, especially infants and toddlers who put toys in their mouths. Not only do plastics cause health problems, they also pollute the environment with hydrochloric acid and unhealthy vapors.

Wooden Play sets
Wooden blocks, peg sets and wooden play sets help your children’s cognitive development through reasoning, problem solving, object recognition and memory. Your children learn through their senses, so holding and inspecting wooden toys like pegs and blocks not only develop thinking but also hand-eye coordination, color discrimination and shape recognition. You can rest easy that your children are safe handling environmentally safe, natural wooden toys without worrying about toxic chemical residue on their hands, which results from handling many plastic toys.

Educational Wooden Toys
Painted colored blocks, wooden stacking games, wooden model sets and wooden cars offer your children fun, wholesome play that teaches patterns, counting and number recognition. There is no end to the imaginary play your children can have, which is the main advantage of wooden toys over plastic toys and electronics. Your children will have fun learning while playing with wooden toys and puzzles as they use their mind for matching, sequencing and experimenting with colored objects. There is no better way for early learning skills that your children need for success in school than with wooden objects.

Wooden Blocks
Wooden block toys provide hours of educational play to your children, no matter if they are infants, toddlers or school age. There is so much more to block play than stacking. Toddlers learn while playing as they carry blocks from one area to another, learning transportations skills. They learn about weight, texture and organization. Older children learn construction skills, dexterity and problem solving as they design bridges and enclosed structures.

Appropriate Age Games
One advantage of wooden toys is that parents have the opportunity to develop games that are age appropriate for their children. If your child is an infant, use colored blogs or pegs for visual discrimination games. You can show hold up a colored block in each hand in front of your baby and move them back and forth, so your baby can follow the blocks with his or her eyes. Older babies can fill and dump blocks out of different containers.

Teach your toddlers cause and effect by helping them line up wooden dominoes or blocks and then knocking them down. You can also help your toddler build a structure and then knock it down.

Preschoolers can create buildings on their own or with your help. Ask them questions about the shape of the blocks or if another shape might work better as you build with wooden toys. These questions teach comparisons of sizes and shapes.
